Excellent golf courses abound and there is often the chance to watch the ancient game of shinty played on local pitches. Strathglass is a delight to visit with the great glens of Cannich Strathfarrar and Affric (National Nature Reserve) to explore encompassing the ancient Caledonian pine forests. Tomich a beautiful stone built conservation village where the first Golden Retriever was bred boasts a good pub and from here visitors can walk to the dramatic gorge and view the rushing Plodda Falls. Inverness (11 miles) offers excellent cultural amenities a new riverside theatre complex fine dining and excellent shopping as well as bottle nosed Dolphin cruises on the Moray Firth and river cruises on Loch Ness. Close to Inverness lies Culloden Moor the site of the last battle fought on British soil in 1746 and with an excellent visitors' centre. Romantic Cawdor Castlecomplete with a tower and drawbridge is popularly associated with Shakespeare's Macbeth and has lovely gardens and grounds. Within an hour's drive the Cairngorm National Park a renowned centre for outdoor pursuits offers mountain bike tracks water sports skiing and snowboarding (in season) the Cairngorm funicular mountain railway Sled dog adventure centre and Cairngorm Reindeer Herd. The Jacobite Trip a steam railway journey crossing the world famous Glenfinnan viaduct (now featuring in the Harry Potter films) should not be missed and the Highland Wildlife Park and Landmark Scotland's 'Theme Park' are also great attractions. Kippford - (Kippford, Kirkcudbrightshire) - Beside the pretty seaside village of Kippford this beautiful park boasts a rare red squirrel population and holds the prized David Bellamy Gold Award for Conservation.

Lovat Highland Bothy - (Wester Lovat, Inverness shire) - Set above the Beauly Firth with far reaching views across to Ben Wyuis from this spacious and well presented lodge. Although the owner lives next door the property still enjoys quiet and private surroundings with a woodland to the rear and an attractive wide deck. The owner has to bee hives within the grounds and occasionally there will be a pot of honey left at the bottom of the garden from them. Only 3 miles from the lovely village of Beauly with good shops and a choice of restaurants. The owners can provide clay pigeon shooting, day or night excursions on a Rib on Loch Ness (both at cost). Dunsyre - (Biggar, Lanarkshire) - This luxurious traditional 'Finnish' log house is a peaceful oasis on the edge of the Pentland Hills. The lodge stands in a secluded one-acre garden backing onto meadows. Care is required with young children as there is a pond and stream. Thistle Lodge - (Invergarry, Inverness-shire) - In a wonderfully scenic location in the heart of the Great Glen, this small group of south-facing Scandinavian pine log lodges all have superb panoramic views of Loch Lochy and the mountain range beyond. To the rear, Ben Tee rises to nearly 3000 ft, ideal for climbing and walking. The Great Glen long distance trail passes the entrance to the chalet park and is very popular with walkers, cyclists and mountaineers. Free fishing is available on Loch Lochy and the use of a boat with ghillie can be arranged at extra cost. Permits are also available for salmon and trout fishing on surrounding rivers and lochs. Water sports centre 3 miles and in the winter months, skiing and snow-boarding can be enjoyed at Nevis Range. This is also a good central base for exploring the majestic scenery and many historic castles and monuments which lie along the Great Glen from Inverness to Fort William. Horse-riding and golf are available at Fort Augustus, where cruises on the Caledonian Canal can also be enjoyed. For those interested in natural history, the area abounds with wildlife - deer, osprey, pine martens, golden eagles and buzzards, to name a few. The pine martens resident near the lodges regularly visit the verandahs to be fed their favourite titbits of a jam or peanut butter piece. Seasonal pub 1.5 miles, small shop 3 miles, general store and pubs at Invergarry (5 miles). The lodges are beautifully sited at the top of a steep slope and have been double glazed and furbished with new furnishings and double glazing throughout to create a warm, welcoming and very comfortable atmosphere. The last half mile to the lodges is on a rough track road. A stock-proof fence surrounds the 5 acre area in which the lodges are sited. The pebbled beach can be reached via a gate leading down a steep embankment to the lochside.Thistle is a particularly spacious two storey lodge with a large private furnished deck at the entrance. 1 double and 1 twin bedroom upstairs; ground floor living area is open plan to a full length observatory / conservatory with spectacular views all year.
